Spring Fever – Setting up a Garden Journal

Oh I have caught Spring Fever for sure!

I have gardening and yard work on the brain, I can not wait for the weather to break and the sun to shine so we can start planting.  But until then I will start planning.  And I can’t plan without an awesome Garden Journal/Smash Book.

So I made one that I love (even made my friend Deb one too so we can compare notes she is my garden guru after all)

Here is mine: It’s pretty simple just some scrapbook paper and stickers covering a composition notebook like this one

And some matching ribbon of course (-:

Some pictures of my peas in the front because they are so darn cute!

IMAG2577

I clipped the seed packets to the front so I know what I liked from previous years I may tape them on the pages soon to make it easier to see them.

IMAG2567

Some articles I liked in magazines so I could recycle what I did not need

IMAG2569

A map that shows when to plant is always good and an envelope in the back for receipts and whatnot.

Covered the back with more scrap paper and there you have it now I can daydream and plan!

It might not be spring yet but I am sure ready!  I will just keep on planning (-:

Troop 1391’s Community Garden

Saturday May 5th our troop met with Franlin County Treasurer Ed Leonard and Grove ity Mayor Ike Stage to plant a Community Garden. We met early to divide up the seeds to plant. While we waited for all the girls the Mayor explained how to plant the seeds.

Once it was time the girls started to dig, the Mayor walked them through each step…..then

He dug up a toad!!! We all saw it as good luck for our garden (-:

After all the belly laughs and screams about Mr. Toad the girls got back to work, Treasurer Leonard helped the girls plant green beans.

The girls were watching to see if Mayor Stage could undig another toad!

Treasurer Leonard getting a chuckle out of Maria, he would point to where she should dig and instead she was dropping the seeds in the place he pushed in LOL !

We stopped for a bit and let the girls recieve thier Community Service badges from our special guest.  They were so excited (-:

A quick picture before we set them loose….

Once we let our guest go to thier other obligation for the day we let the girls finish they had a blast but nothing was in any order whatsoever we just made sure we had everything marked!

Look at me girls BE PROUD we are doing this for the Mid Ohio Food Bank!

ALL DONE!

Snack time I made sure we had apples and plenty of water.  I handed out garden journals for the girls to keep track of the garden and to be handed in later.  I gave plenty of info aboput the garden and food bank not to mention a schedule to follow for weeding and watering.

Grandma Scout finally got out of the car! She was cold (-: She told the girls all about her Grandma Ellis’s farm in Georgia from when she was growing up.

Abby told the girls all about the compost pile when they were looking foe a trash can.  Nope she said throw them in the pile!

One last picture I wish all our girls could have been there!  I hope tyhe girls learn a lot from our garden the food will help a lot of families from going hungry.

Two Peas Garden Update July 2011

STINK BUGS HAVE INVADED~!

What is a stink bug you ask? well its a brown bug that I think looks like a wooden shield, google stink bug and it will tell you all about this new pest that sprays won’t kill!  My friend TJ was talking about them at lunch the other day, I told him I just saw one on my pepper plant I just kept flicking him away and he kept coming back.  That is when he told me about the damage they do and the millions of eggs they lay….OK not millions but hundreds for sure.  I looked that night and didn’t see the bug or eggs SHOOOO I thought and told my friends the next day.  Well! two days later (Friday in fact) while outside playing with the girls and looking for growing veggies.  I saw two Adults on a leaf my friend Debbie said to drown them in soapy water so I ran inside and grabbed a pickle jar with warm soapy water……on a mission to kill these pest I got one in the jar and lost the other!! OH NO! then the worst discovery…..

The eggs :

Now look at this garden:

I stayed in that back yard with my peas for 4 hours looking through each leaf and found so many eggs 1/4 of these leaves are now gone.  And I was able to see a little of each veggie that we are growing I just really hope that they aren’t too affected.  I was so warm out I had jeans on so I wouldn’t get all itchy when out come Py with my life line…..

How sweet is she??

SO then after I went through each leaf the girls wanted to pick some beans so we stayed out just a little longer  (-:

Phoebe was the most excited I love to hear her yell “a bean I found one” !

Let big sissy help you there …

My big girl helper telling me how big the yellow summer squash is she just spotted (-;

Pyper was just not impressed with the tiny bean Phoebe picked and lectured her on how you know when a bean IS ready to be picked.  LOL!

Saturday morning while looking out the window I caught a glimpse of another leaf with eggs I rolled up my jammies and ran out with another pickle jar.  After I found two more leaves with eggs I spotted him the other adult bug!

I drowned him see below he is upside down and dead dead dead, I accidentally knocked the jar over BUT he was still dead and I sealed him and the egged up leaves in the jar to throw away.

Be sure to check back for more garden updates!!

Happy gardening and may stink bugs never make their way to YOUR garden!

OH ALMOST FORGOT

we found this little cutie too!

he was teeny the size of a pinky finger nail!

PS Today is Sunday and I found more eggs!!! DANG IT!

The girls and I went away last weekend and when we came home that Sunday we got this!  this was one week ago tomorrow…wait until I put up pictures of it now!I was about to go out and water the garden, it was almost 90 degrees outside I was just about to go when Py ran upstairs.  I asked what she was doing and she said she would be right down… and when she came back she had changed out of her pajama’s to this…..

DSC04572Yes, long sleeves and pants this little girl will never wear pants all winter she would only wear them under skirts and dresses. By the way she pegged them herself too and don’t look at the floors Chad is putting the tiles down as I write!

Py’s garden update…

We ll we finally got it together Chad was sweet enough to put the bed together  after we spent too long staring at the wood at lowes trying to figure out how big I wanted the garden.

He also picked a spot right outside our dining room window so Py can keep a good eye one it.

We also planted cucumbers and radishes (4 kinds).  We  planted on Sunday everything but the radishes, I was telling my wonderful friend Debbie about Pyper looking out Sunday night sad that her garden wasn’t growing yet.   So Debbie brought Pyper and I four varieties she even brought a pink kind just for Py, but she said the sprout pretty fast so by Monday Py can see some growth.  We love Deb!

DSC04497

OH I almost forgot! We also planted sunflowers in a big pot, I used this as a practive for when we planted the seeds in the big garden.
