Using Resources Wisely – Cookie Cases – Re-Blogged

 

Look at all those boxes!   Surely there is something clever we can do with those…..

 

WP_20140304_006This year as you know we added two Daisies to our troop, we started to work on Journey books at our meetings but after two meetings and two leaders trying to work with three groups…well, it just wasn’t working.   So I sat down and looked at all the other earned patches and petals that the girls could work on together.

So for our first unified meeting we worked on the Junior Drawing, Brownie Painting and Daisy Using Resources wisely patches.

What we did was use all but one end of the cookie boxes talk about using resources wisely!  I used a box cutter of course

I was careful but still ended up tossing a couple of the ends because I cut wrong, good thing I had a ton!

So basically you are are tossing out the two small side on one end and keeping all the rest…..for what you ask?

Sketch Books and Easels!

I went ahead and pre-poked the holes in the books and paper for the sketch books and made kits for each girl with a sharpened pencil too.

 Pretty easy to assemble just make sure the writing is on the inside cover so the outside cover can be decorated.

Then for the easel …. I found that the tagalongs and dosidos were the best for this one. I used the bulk of the box for this again with the writing on the inside.  Simply attach the boxes on the top so that they stand up.  I used duck tape to keep it together and heavy plastic sheets recycled from reports I get everyday.  Normally tossed in the recycle bin I justs kept mine.  Here it is in stages…..First duck taped closed….second glued the plastic sheet on the box so the paint wouldn’t run through to the cardboard and third with the clip holding the watercolor paper on to the easel.

It took a few hours getting 12 together and of course making sure it worked LOL!  I got each girl her own water color paints (97 cents each at walmart), and brushes.

All set to take to the meeting…..Our project was this taking the part of of the law that states “Be  a sister to every girl scout” sketch something that shows this action and then paint it.

I mixed the girls up too, split up the three groups to sit with each other and if they went to the same school, they didn’t sit together.  It’s a constant struggle with girls to make sure every one of them get along, I try not to stand in from of them lecturing instead trying to incorporate this principle in our meetings.

It was a great meeting, I took 5 pictures of the above and still couldn’t get them all to smile at once LOL! maybe next meeting will be photography???

Update Re-Blog of the Girl Scout Cookie Lanyards with 2015 Varieties

It’s cookie season as you know, and we are getting ready for a lot of cookie sale opportunities!   With all of our booth ideas running through our heads we are also getting ready for Walk About Week.  For those that don’t know that is when we go door to door as a troop.  First thing I made for the girls is a lanyard to make it easier and faster when some one asks what kind and how much.

Here is a short tutorial on how I made ours….

5 yards of thick cos grain ribbon made 18 lanyards, it could make more or less depending on how long you make yours.

I had gotten a bag of these at a yard sale for a dollar I like using these for the lanyard clip than the two-part way you see a lot online.  Lace this through the ribbon first.

Then sew the ribbon together.  I sewed it three times across because the girls will pull on them I am sure.

I printed out the cookie variety and the price cheat sheet and stuck them to a green paper to match the ribbon.

Once I cut them out I laminated them and cut the out again with my helper…

Troop 1391 Sports Night

Every summer our troop meets at a local park since we normally meet at a school and don’t have access when school is out. Not to mention who wants cooped up in a school when it is SUMMER!  So for our first meeting I just wanted the girls to have fun putting lots of thought into it I decided we would be as active as we could. (Unfortunately only 4 girls showed up to this meeting but it was still fun (-: )

We began with 

Jump Rope ten times then the Long Jump: Run until they get to the hula hoop then jump as far as they can Ms. Erin will then use a ribbon to measure.

 I never saw it coming but all the girls kept falling luckily no one was hurt and they all laughed it off, my little pea falls all the time so it wasn’t new to her but boy she she love seeing the other girls do the same as her!

 They loved this and I loved getting them so active so we decided this is how we will always have our first meeting after summer break!

 Snacks: Water bottles, apples, oranges and gold fish crackers although it was so hot that day the water bottles were used in a more fun way (-:  Since we were short half our troop we were done way early so the girls just let loose!

Troop 1391’s Summer Weekend at Camp Wakatomika

This past summer (2014) Troop 1391 had their first full weekend at camp and it was a blast rain and all these girls had fun!

Getting ready for our first full weekend I made fire starters, tested out the crafts we made t-shirt bags so I used mine as the charades game holder! We made dog tags and sharpie tie die t-shirts too.  We also made bug jars and had bug catchers and little magnifying glasses to look at but not keep the bugs (-:

 Our first night we watched movies and had popcorn while each of the girls arrived.  Some of the girls went on a hike while it was day light too.  And of course they played a mean game of charades!

The next day though they all went out Ms Lisa and Ms Erin took them during the day and then Ms Lisa and I took them for their night hike!

Here is our camp menu  CAMP MENU   and a letter for the parents on  What To bring    Now what we did with the walking tacos….we made it like a to go lunch in case parents came early it wouldn’t keep them from getting on the road.

My whole troop cleaned the cabin and it sparkled I really believe we were the first ones there in quite some time because it was not in good shape either.  I am proud of my girls for taking the time to clean it up and make it wonderful for the next troop.

After the troop left; the peas and I stayed and clean the fire pit up (this was almost 2 hours of hard work but we did it!), when we got there it was in horrible condition looks like the last people to use it never cleaned it out and it sat all winter.   The youngest pea cleaned out all the chunks of wood laying around and the oldest pea helped me move the old ashes.  Remember as a Scout you must leave things better than they were when you got there.

 One last shot of the peas and we were on our way home ! Hot sweaty messes ready to fight for the shower LOL!   We can not wait until next year!

Using Resources Wisely (CDs)/End of the Cookie Season Party

At the end of every cookie season it has been a tradition in out Troop to have an end of the cookie season party.  We go year round so we don’t have an end of the year party.  Because of this I try to make it extra special.  This year I made each girl a CD scrapbook.

Supplies are as follows:  

Paper Cutter

Exacto knife

Glue Dots and Strips

Glue Runner

Old CDs

Scrapbook Paper

Stickers

Crop-o-dile Hole Punch

Scissors

Book Rings (cheaper in the office section than the craft section)

Ribbon

And small wallet size pictures

 I used my Creative Memories Circle cutters for the paper to cover the CDs, you can easily use your exacto knife too cut around the CD after you attached the scrap paper.

Once I get all the paper on I punch the hole.  making sure each one is the same measurement from the edge. If they aren’t it looks really weird when the CDs don’t line up.

I made three different versions Daisy, Brownie and Junior so as you can imagine it was a mess!

Once done with adding the pictures and bling attach together with the book ring and add ribbon.

 I also made small bags for each Scout used fabric markers to put their name on them and ironed on a wordle mix with all the girls names.  Since we had camp coming up as a reminder I made s’more baggies with the details of our trip and sealed with an owl that I found at Micheal’s.  Added their badges and more candy and was ready to give to the girls !

We had the girls write on paper what they were happy for with all the intentions of making a “happy” video with them dancing around carrying their signs……that didn’t quite work out.  They were happy for so much you wouldn’t be able to see the writing on the paper!  (not to mention of couple of older wallflowers LOL)

Troop 1391’s Investiture, Bridging and Re-Dedication Ceremony 2013

If you are a regular reader of my blog you know just how disappointed I was with the program part of our ceremony last year, therefore this year I was on a mission.  I searched Pinterest for ideas and saw the color scheme My Co-Leader and I love! Then the hard part LOL  I sat and thought about everything….Our Troop has three levels and we have new girls I saw nothing that appealed to us in a traditional ceremony.  Therefore, we had a Scout’s own or Leader’s own either way you look at it, it embodied everything our Troop is.

THE PROGRAM

When I scripted the program I really wanted to showcase each of the levels and what they had accomplished so far. So for the Junior’s and their Road to the Bronze I had them read an excerpt from their Anti-Bullying Campaign speech. ( I will blog more about that soon!)  Our Brownie’s would showcase their  WOW Journey by telling their families how they have saved on water and showed pictures of how they would save water.  I would introduce the Juniors having worked with them on this journey and Ms. Erin would introduce the Brownies as she worked with them. Our new Daisies were super good waiting (-:

Next, I had Ms Erin call the girls to Re-Dedicate, I called the girls to Bridge (My 4th grade Pea included!) and as much as I wanted to call over the new Scouts I had Ms Erin do it, my youngest Pea was among the three and I would have lost it…that being said I will admit I read through a script a million times that I wrote for the whole program, and I still read it off the paper.   NERVES!

Once this was done, we called over the girls who where Re-Dedicating, gave them their patches and had them move over to the Friendship Circle, the same with the girls who Bridged and finally the girls who Invested.

Since I had a new Co-Leader this she Invested too, the Leaders then joined the circle and sang the whole Make New Friends song not the short one we do in the meetings!

Then we had the girls read out loud what they loved most about Girl Scouts I had them write this out along with a picture of themselves in uniform at one of the meetings.  I taped them together so they could show the picture while they read, after the were done they took the picture to their family, gave hugs and came back.

To finish up the program we had some announcements then we recited the law and the pledge all together instead of individually when we invested etc…. The Program went really well! We were so busy with planning for camp that we literally had one meeting to get the girls with the program, where to stand, when to speak etc, etc.  But the way I planned it if they listened to what we said they would be perfect, I literally put instruction to them into what I was saying to the families. ( I stuttered and almost cried but they all got it LOL)

THE DECORATIONS

I used a lot of the print outs from http://www.birdsparty.com/ she was nice enough to create a pink and green Girl Scout theme that my co-leader and I fell in love with!

We used all green, pink and white table clothes to match then I used Bird’s creations to make photo blocks (from Oriental Trading Co) I used her print out for two sides, used the same pink, green and white card stock and printed out our girls names and the occasion for the other two sides, added ribbon and that is what was used as center pieces.  I had taken pictures when the weather was nice and we were meeting at the park, (our Daisies got their own since they were not in the troop yet) so we added those and that was the take home gift.

We put their patches that they had earned in little organza bags and used tags from Bird too!  We placed them in my girls Easter baskets that just happened to match!

Now the most time spent on the decorations….I made posters to showcase almost everything we had done in 2013 for all the families to see.  I will be honest I did not sleep at all the night the night before the ceremony,  I made a ton of  posters and it took forever so you may want to start more than a day ahead of time (-: ! Here is just a few we were so lucky that the place had so many windows we put one poster in each one!  We even had our posters from the Booth sales we had to showcase the one we did win the Bling Your Booth Contest after all!

We also made our own bridge I used the same flower pots from last years and put foam in them I spray painted dowell rods pink (in a snow storm yes that is dedication!) and I dyed rope with jello to make it pink, used card stock to make grass and constructed it at the party center.

I loved Bird’s Law and Promise print out as like others before I framed them for our table up front where us Leaders stood for the program.

Last but not least I made the programs Program you can open it here if you would like to change things around and make it your own (: Just copy them onto two sided paper, or print out as two sided and fold in half add a ribbon if you like make it fancy!

My Co-Leader loved the photo booth I did last year and wanted to do it again. So she got the cutest polka dot material and we used the removable hooks and put it on the closet door.  I brought last years props, and she made brand new ones for the girls.  It’s always fun! (our bat is an homage to our camp out)!

THE FOOD

We had asked that our parents bring two dozen cookies, we had a sign up sheet to ensure we didn’t get nothing but chocolate chip LOL !  We made sure the ceremony was not at lunch time we made it at 2:30 so that the girls would have already eaten.
